‘Sitges’ & ¨Automne à Longueuil¨ - Inside The Paintings
These oil paintings are the first I have ever attempted to create. A 49 year gestation period finally born.
Over the last seven years I've been attracted to drawing or painting as a creative channeling for my thoughts and
expressions. One morning, I walked into our rather huge garage space in Nassau with an epiphany. I was going to
paint the entire bare ugly white garage walls anything I damn well liked!
I enthusiastically rushed off to the local hardware store buying some Benjamin Moore colours and a few paint
brushes with palettes. Thus began my foray into pseudo art world a la Corey. I was coincidentally reading a
fascinating biography on Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. It all came together in a burst of visionary excitement. By the
way my song 'She's Everywhere' from A&V CD is written about Maddona who also happens to admire Frida Kahlo's
work.
But what a mess I made over the ensuing months. Paint droppings, splashes and squishes all over the floor, ceiling,
my face, body, clothes and shoes. I was so disorganized. A veritable wrecking crew.
One of the beauties of painting, unlike my experience with songwriting, is that time bears no consequence. It is
rendered obsolete. There is no clock ticking. I can leave a canvas or drawing for 6 months & resume anew like it
was just moments ago.
Songs for me within a few days if not composed to satisfaction are scrapped & purged into rejected files. I must
have 300 unfinished melodies or lyrics half or quarter baked. This is how I engage with my music. Painting is totally
different. One colour or stroke may come only months forward when I have free time or inspiration leads.
My Mom brought me to see the Tate Gallery in London when I was 10 years old. Truthfully I wasn’t bored at all. I
was actually excited. I particularly loved the Impressionist styles of Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh and Paul
Cezanne. I even memorized a huge book on the Impressionist Era. I could easily identify every single one of the
books paintings by the style of the painter.
Please don’t misunderstand. I am 100% dilettante in Art. I don't really know what constitutes being classified
properly as an ' artist'. Although since the age of 19, I have been referred to as one through my recording
career. Do I possess a stylized form similar to 'abstract art'? Who knows? It´s all in the eye of the beholder.
Sitges is a charming city south of Barcelona. It has retained all of the cultural dynamics of the old world yet moves
trendy, hip and ultra-modern in so many other ways. On the beach sculptors set up their daily made sand castles
for tourists or locals to admire. They are quite remarkable. I saw one akin to the painting I made. Many months
later I remembered this image and thus led her to canvas in my own quirky imagination.
´Automne a Longueuil´ is where & when I fell in love with Julie. It is her birthplace. We spent endless hours
discovering one another in the Autumn of 1994.
